6th Safer Gambling Week 9 – 15 October 2023
This year, Safer Gambling Week will take place from 9 to 15 October 2023 with the main theme being “Enjoy the game, play safely”
The National Betting Authority (NBA) is organising for the 6th consecutive year the Safer Gambling Week, which aims to inform and raise awareness among players and the public about safer gambling.
The main theme of the Week, which will be held from 9 to 15 October 2023, is “Enjoy the game, play safely”. The Safer Gambling Week (SGW) will kick-off with the 6th Safer Gambling Conference, while a series of events will be held throughout the Week, such as presentations, educational seminars, interactive workshops, and more.
The NBA’s objective is to inform the public on how to keep gambling a safe and fun activity, the self-protection tools available to players, the risks of problem gambling and gambling related harms, as well as where to seek support and treatment. Through the Safer Gambling Week, the Authority aims to raise awareness about gambling and spread the message that gambling should remain a fun and enjoyable activity for those that choose to gamble. SGW is a platform for discussion and constructive dialogue between various stakeholders of the Cypriot society and aims to mobilise all stakeholders in creating an environment that will prevent addictive behaviours.
NBA President, Ms. Ioanna Fiakkou pointed out that the Authority follows a public health approach in regard to gambling. According to Ms. Fiakkou, “the SGW is part of the NBA’s Safer Gambling Strategy, which, in turn, is based on the public health approach to gambling. Our aim is to reduce any gambling related harm, therefore protecting the community and providing added benefits, while ensuring the sustainability of the sector”.
Ms. Fiakkou stressed that the Authority’s priority is to protect both the players and the community from any gambling related harm, while at the same time ensuring the growth and sustainable development of the sector. Furthermore, she added that “SGW has become an institution, as demonstrated by the ever-increasing number of participants every year. The public actively participates and is informed on matters related to safer gambling and holds open and honest discussions regarding problem gambling, thus helping break the stigma associated with gambling”.
